I've visited many homes where the railing and spindles going up the stairs are not very smooth. Painters sometimes use a very fine sand paper to smooth them out, but it leaves streaks or scratches, especially if they are painted. Try this most unusual solution...... CARDBOARD! Just take a cardboard box and rip a piece large enough to wrap around the spindles and "rub away those rough spots". You will be amazed how simple it is.
